Matthias Stom: First Italian Monographic Exhibition in Brescia

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The "Matthias Stom. Un caravaggesco nelle collezioni lombarde" exhibition is currently taking place at the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia, marking the first solo showcase of the Baroque artist in Italy, which will continue until February 15. Curated by Gianni Papi, the exhibition presents around twelve pieces from Lombard collections, including two recently acquired artworks. Born circa 1600 in the Southern Netherlands, Stom was influenced by Caravaggio and is recognized for his dark, atmospheric scenes. His death remains a mystery. The exhibition challenges Benedict Nicolson's assertion of Stom's lack of variety, emphasizing his creative compositions. Notable pieces include The Incredulity of Saint Thomas and Christ Among the Doctors. A study day will occur on February 12, and a newly found Nativity is showcased at the Museo Diocesano in Genoa.
