Matteo Vettorello Wins Life Beyond Plastic with Sonic Sculpture
Matteo Vettorello's Sintonizzatore di decongestione ambientale, a ritualistic sound sculpture resembling a giant rain stick, won the Life Beyond Plastic call launched in autumn 2019 by Istituto Oikos with HelpCode Italia, Acquario di Genova, Comune di Milano, and MUSE – Museo delle Scienze di Trento. The work aims to shake ecological apathy by using biometric technology that measures two voices' harmony to sustain the tube's oscillation. It was installed for two weeks in Milan's Piazza XXIV Maggio. Other winners: Valentina Furian (Nautilus at MUSE) and Riccardo Buonafede (PLASTIC EGO / PLASTINSIDE at Acquario di Genova). The jury included artist Maria Cristina Finucci as artistic director and architect Stefano Boeri as president. A video of the work was made by Maurangelo Quagliarella.
