Matteo Messori's 'Sospesi' at YAG/garage Explores Metaphysical Forms

On September 21, 2018, YAG/garage in Pescara opened 'Sospesi', a solo exhibition by Matteo Messori (b. 1993), a graduate of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna. The show features paintings and sculptures depicting precarious, organic-like forms that the artist calls 'subjects' rather than objects, alluding to mysterious containers in search of an elusive pure identity. Messori describes his work as anachronistic and 'rude' compared to historical Metaphysical painting, yet he embraces the metaphysical as an ethical vibration rather than a style. The exhibition space is divided into three invisible rooms to create dialogues between works and the container. Messori's series 'Antiforma' explores human identification through a blend of surrealist unconscious form and metaphysical exactness, while 'Formastante' investigates material juxtapositions and precarious balances, aiming to subtract weight from forms in a nod to Italo Calvino's concept of lightness. The artist sees contemporary society as a 'petrified era' dominated by heaviness, and his work seeks lightness where it is absent. YAG/garage functions as a bridge between academia and the professional art world, allowing recent academy graduates to create and exhibit works that enter its permanent collection.
