Matteo Garrone's Dogman premieres at Cannes 2018

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

Matteo Garrone's film Dogman premiered at the 71st Cannes Film Festival, competing for the Palme d'Or. It is the second Italian film in competition. The story follows Marcello, a gentle dog groomer in a bleak Roman suburb, who endures humiliation from a violent bully and eventually snaps. The film is loosely inspired by the true crime story of Pietro De Negri, known as 'er canaro' of the Magliana district, who in 1988 tortured and killed Giancarlo Ricci, an ex-boxer and local criminal. Garrone worked on the screenplay for 12 years, waiting to meet actor Marcello Fonte, whose humanity clarified the character. The film explores themes of solitude, violence, and the illusion of redemption. Garrone previously presented Tale of Tales at Cannes.
