Matteo Coluccia's 'Piton de la Furnaise' inaugurates Spazio Su in Lecce

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A new independent art space, Spazio Su, has opened in Lecce, Italy, in a historic palazzo in the city center. Founded by Grazie Amelia Bellita and Gianni D'Urso, the venue aims to serve as a cross-media platform for relational art and dialogue among artists. Its inaugural project is a performance by Matteo Coluccia (b. 1992), a Salento-born artist based in Florence, titled 'Piton de la Furnaise.' In the performance, two giant testicles move nervously up and down a narrow, long staircase that constitutes the exhibition space. Inside, Coluccia and another performer continuously smoke a pack of cigarettes, pacing every step of the stairs with restless energy, reminiscent of the volcano after which the performance is named. They leave cigarette butts on the floor. Coluccia's research heavily explores interpersonal relationships and human perception, a mission echoed by Spazio Su. A painting—described by the artist as 'improper documentation'—and the remnants of the performance trace a transient path.
