Artist Matt Freedman's 2014 book 'Relatively Indolent But Relentless: A Cancer Treatment Journal' documents his 2012 battle with tongue, neck, and lung cancer through a unique blend of handwritten text and fluid illustrations. Created during two months of intensive radiation and chemotherapy, Freedman filled four notebook pages daily, producing a work that defies traditional illness narratives with its dark humor and semi-comic format. His drawings range from cartoonish anatomical cross-sections to precise yet gruesome images like razor blades through tongues and burn patterns resembling maps. The publisher preserved the original handwritten text, sometimes scrawled on bus rides or under painkillers, creating a hybrid visual-verbal experience. Freedman's artistic practice includes absurd performances blending historical events with contemporary sports, such as reenacting the French Revolution alongside U.S. Open tennis matches. His 2012 solo exhibition 'The Golem of Ridgewood' at Valentine Gallery in Queens featured papier-mâché sculptures exploring Jewish resistance during World War II. The memoir also incorporates personal memories, from childhood reflections to meeting his wife after a studio accident, alongside observations of Hurricane Sandy from his Boston hospital exile.
