Mats Stjernstedt to curate Nordic Pavilion at 2017 Venice Biennale
Mats Stjernstedt has been selected to curate the Nordic Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. Moderna Museet in Sweden appointed him, with the pavilion jointly representing Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Stjernstedt serves as artistic director of Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo, Norway, and previously led Index – the Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation in Stockholm from 2001 to 2009. A collaborative agreement among the three nations will see them work together across three Venice Biennale editions from 2017 to 2021. Each country will designate a national institution as commissioner and manager for its respective edition. Following Moderna Museet in 2017, Frame Visual Art Finland will oversee the 2019 pavilion, and the Office for Contemporary Art, Norway will manage the 2021 iteration. The announcement was made on 26 February 2016.
