Matisse's 'Atelier Rouge' at Fondation Louis Vuitton for 70th Death Anniversary

exhibition · 2026-04-26

To mark 70 years since Henri Matisse's death, his seminal painting 'Atelier Rouge' (1911) is on view at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris from May 7 to September 9, 2024, alongside the actual objects and artworks depicted in it. The work, initially rejected by Russian collector Sergei Shchukin, remained with Matisse for 16 years before being acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1949. The exhibition follows presentations at MoMA and the SMK – National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen. The painting shows Matisse's studio in Issy-les-Moulineaux, a Paris suburb, and includes works like 'The Young Sailor' (1906) and 'Corsica. The Old Mill' (1898). Also on display are related pieces such as 'The Blue Window' (1913) and 'Large Red Interior' (1948). MoMA's chief curator Ann Temkin called the painting a milestone in the tradition of studio paintings and a radical work that influenced artists like Mark Rothko and Ellsworth Kelly, who has a retrospective at the same venue in 2024.
