Matisse by Matisse: Largest Retrospective in China at UCCA Beijing
The UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing will host 'Matisse by Matisse,' the largest retrospective of Henri Matisse ever organized in China, from March to June 2022. The exhibition features 250 works from the Musée Matisse Le Cateau-Cambrésis, curated by its director Patrice Deparpe. Divided into ten sections, it covers Matisse's career from early studies and Fauve breakthrough to stylistic explorations and the influence of his travels, including a period in Tahiti. A section examines Matisse's impact on Chinese painting from the 1920s to 1940s. After Beijing, the show will travel to UCCA EDGE in Shanghai from July to October 2022. UCCA CEO Philip Tinari expressed honor in presenting key 20th-century figures to Chinese audiences. UCCA is China's leading independent contemporary art institution, with venues in Beijing, Aranya (DUNE), Shanghai (EDGE), and a fourth opening in Chengdu in 2024.
