Matilde Chizzola's Eccentric Illustrations Blend Geometry and Whimsy

Matilde Chizzola, a freelance graphic designer and illustrator born in 1997 in Savona, Italy, creates surreal illustrations where characters with distorted, disjointed limbs merge with their surroundings. Her work, described as exuberant, angular, and bizarre, intentionally breaks perspective and anatomical rules. Chizzola holds a degree in Graphic Design and Multimedia from LABA Academy in Brescia and won a scholarship in Business Illustration at The Sign Academy in Florence in 2021. She cites contemporary illustrators Gosia Herba, Anni Tett, Júlia Sardà, and Pam Whisbow as inspirations. Her research focuses on finding quirky ways to represent scenes or concepts, transforming bodies into fluid forms like flags in the wind and objects into intersecting puzzle pieces. She plays with geometry and rejects conventional perspective and anatomy. Chizzola's creative process begins with brainstorming in a sketchbook, then moves to digital, using a personal color palette adjusted in saturation and brightness for stylistic consistency. During the pandemic, she became more productive and evolved her visual language. She dreams of creating a children's book and seeing her work on a magazine cover. Currently, she works on advertising illustrations and has personal projects in children's narrative.
