Mathew McWilliams and Antiveduto Gramatica: A Baroque Dialogue at Nuova Galleria Morone

Nuova Galleria Morone in Milan presents "Mathew McWilliams. Things as they are, un dialogo con Antiveduto Gramatica," curated by Roberto Lacarbonara, running from March 26 to May 29, 2026. The exhibition pairs contemporary Canadian painter Mathew McWilliams (b. 1973, Vancouver) with Baroque master Antiveduto Gramatica (Rome, 1571–1626), centering on Gramatica's "Concerto a quattro figure" (1608–1610). McWilliams' works, created for the show, use inkjet CMYK inks on divided surfaces to analyze the Baroque composition's invisible structures and lines of tension without direct quotation. The dialogue explores memory, perception, and the epistemological potential of painting, with McWilliams' analytical approach preserving the emotional and narrative quality of Gramatica's original. Gallerist Diego Viapiana is noted for his theatrical, museum-quality exhibitions. The show is McWilliams' first solo at the gallery and is accompanied by a catalog.
