Matera's modernist Lanera, Serra Venerdì and Spine Bianche neighborhoods to be regenerated
The administration of Matera has embarked on a revitalization initiative for the neighborhoods of Lanera, Serra Venerdì, and Spine Bianche, recognized for their post-war Italian modernist designs from the 1950s, created by architects such as Luigi Piccinato and Luisa Anversa. In accordance with Special Law n. 619 and Piccinato's regulatory framework, the city has tasked DeAssociati and Sapienza University's CITERA laboratory with developing 'norm sheets' for future developments, marking a first in Italy. These neighborhoods are designated as 'tessuti A' in the recent regulatory plan. A community engagement phase, 'La voce dei quartieri di Matera,' overseen by Francesco Maggiore, utilized three totems for resident input. The norm sheets are anticipated by spring 2025 to facilitate regeneration while honoring historical elements.
