Matera's Emotional Atlas: A Participatory Art Project

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The exhibition "La Secretissima camera de lo Core" at Biblioteca Tommaso Stigliani in Matera marks the latest development in a collaborative project by Associazione Teatro dei Sassi and Fondazione Matera – Basilicata 2019. Over three hundred residents contributed to 'Mappe delle Emozioni,' sharing personal secrets and memories linked to cherished locations in the city. These unique maps are housed in identical blue boxes. Approximately forty artists then produced visual, literary, and video pieces inspired by these emotions. Described as an 'interactive exhibition labyrinth,' it encourages visitors to engage with Matera's intimate landscape while wearing white gloves. The mapping was guided by cultural figures including writer Alessandro Baricco and artist Stefano Faravelli. The exhibition is open until July 31, 2019, with hopes of global replication by artistic director Massimo Lanzetta.
