Matera Film Festival Reimagines Itself as a Sundance-Style Hub for Independent Cinema

festival-fair · 2026-05-21

Established in 2019, the Matera International Film Festival (MATIFF) is evolving into a key destination for independent filmmakers worldwide. Valentina Castellani Quinn, the artistic director, unveiled the MAMA market aimed at fostering development and networking within the independent cinema sector. Scheduled from September 26 to October 4, 2026, the festival was introduced at Cannes by founder Leonardo Fuina, jury president Joyce Pierpoline, and consultant Hans Fraikin. Its theme is "Mediterranean, Mirror of the World." Recognized as a UNESCO site since 1993, Matera is now the Mediterranean Capital of Dialogue and Culture. Awards were presented to director Pan Nalin and Alberto Barbera, while a screenwriting initiative will assist Italian writers in adapting scripts for platforms like Netflix. The event welcomes public attendance.
