Matera 2019: weekend events with La Fura dels Baus, Nasini, Vidokle

Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 presents a weekend program from August 9 to 12, featuring three key events. Spanish theater company La Fura dels Baus, with Ulderico Pesce and Mauro Diazzi, debuts 'La Bella Vergogna' on August 10 at Banxhurna in San Paolo Albanese, with repeats on August 11 and 12. The performance transforms shame into beauty, referencing Matera's past as a 'national shame' (termed by Togliatti in 1948) into a 'maximum beauty' as Capital of Culture. Artist Matteo Nasini inaugurates 'Torre Stormita' on August 9 at Torre Bollita in Nova Siri, a sound installation converting wind into sound via vibrating sculptures, part of the Residenze program curated by Nicoletta Guglielmucci and supported by BCC Basilicata. Russian artist and e-flux editor Anton Vidokle begins a residency at Oliveto Lucano until August 12 for Gardentopia, a project on green culture and active citizenship coordinated by curator Pelin Tan. Vidokle will create a film with local citizens, documenting the annual tree marriage festival in Basilicata and a fiction about three anthropomorphic trees. Gardentopia involves 18 artists working on 32 community gardens across the region.
