Matera 2019: Weekend Events Include Garden Tours, Live Role-Playing, and Performances
Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 presents a weekend of events from June 12 to 21, 2019, focusing on cultural roots and community engagement. The Gardentopia Day on June 16, curated by Pelin Tan, sends two bus routes from Matera to community gardens in Basilicata. One route visits Irsina for a performance by Futurefarmers and Maria Pecchioli, the other goes to Metaponto for an Epicurean garden performance by Greek collective Errands. Both converge at Castelsaraceno for a community dinner with Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija and philosopher Nicola Perullo. The Heritage Games – Festival N-Stories, running June 12-21, features live role-playing games, urban games, interactive exhibitions, and Instagram storytelling workshops to explore Matera's social history. The Petrolio project, starting June 11, presents site-specific dance and performance by Alessandro Sciarroni (Golden Lion for Dance 2019), Maria Hassabi, and Silvia Rampelli, inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini, examining human-nature relationships in the Anthropocene.
