Matera 2019: Weekend Events in the European Capital of Culture

Matera, the European Capital of Culture 2019, presents a weekend of events from June 21-23, 2019, centered on art as a tool to rediscover local traditions and cultural roots. The highlight is the opening of 'La Poetica dei Numeri Primi', the third major exhibition of the program, curated by mathematician Piergiorgio Odifreddi. It spans five venues between Metaponto and Matera, including the Museo Archeologico di Metaponto and Palazzo Acito. The exhibition explores the relationship between mathematics and art, from Pythagoras to algorithms. At Metaponto, two shows open on June 21: 'Numeri nel tempo' and 'Riempire il vuoto', featuring interactive installations by Open Design School. On June 23, Palazzo Acito opens with works by Ugo Nespolo, Tobia Ravà, and Aldo Spizzichino. Special events include 'Una notte con Pitagora' and 'Aspettando l’alba con Pitagora' at the Parco Archeologico di Metaponto, and a performance 'Vite immaginarie di Pitagora e Ipazia' with David Riondino and Valeria Solarino. Additionally, the 'Matera Alberga' project offers a workshop on June 22 titled 'Le origini del Contemporaneo', led by Dario Carmentano and Francesco Cascino, exploring Duchamp and conceptualism. The artist duo Vedovamazzei (Stella Scala and Simeone Crispino) invites the community to participate in creating a public light installation on the theme of hospitality at the Residenza Mons. Brancaccio, starting June 21.
