Matera 2019: Six citizen-proposed projects for the European Capital of Culture

Six citizen-proposed projects will take place in Matera and the Basilicata region as part of Matera 2019 European Capital of Culture. The projects include: an open-air performance of Pergolesi's 'La serva padrona' in Pietragalla on October 27, involving the entire village; a construction of a 'house with nothing' by migrant workers and artists Guendalina Salini and Giulia Anita Bari at Borgo Taccone from October 14-16, addressing precarious housing; a community meal and compost art project by Viviana Marchiò in San Paolo Albanese on October 20, inspired by anthropologist Vito Teti's concept of 'restanza'; a photographic exhibition in Matera titled 'Dalla vergogna all'orgoglio' featuring two projects on homosexual confinement under Fascism and LGBTQ+ activism; a night walk through Sassi districts with 219 participants carrying LED-lit sticks; and an inclusive spontaneous football tournament in Matera streets from September 21-22, with referees from FIGC or FISDIR following players' rules. The projects are organized by various local associations including ARCI, Agedo, and Tam Tam.
