Matera 2019 Program Unveiled with 300 Projects and 117 Artists

The program for Matera 2019, European Capital of Culture, was presented in a press conference in Matera. The event, with the slogan "Open Future," features 300 projects involving 117 artists and curators, spanning 48 weeks from January 19 to December 19, 2019. The budget is €48 million over seven years, with €6 million allocated for legacy. The opening ceremony on January 19 will include marching bands from 27 European capitals of culture and 2,000 musicians, broadcast live by Rai. The project extends to 131 municipalities in the Basilicata region and includes collaborations with Plovdiv (Bulgaria), the other 2019 European Capital of Culture, and other Italian and European cities. Notable figures present included Mayor Raffaello De Ruggieri, Vice President of Basilicata Flavia Franconi, Director Paolo Verri, Artistic Director Joseph Grima, and Foundation President Salvatore Adduce. Culture Minister Alberto Bonisoli emphasized a long-term vision for Matera to 2039, positioning culture as a driver for Southern Italy's development.
