Matera 2019: Brian Eno, Subsonica, and Nicola Campogrande in Concert
As part of the Matera 2019 European Capital of Culture program, three major concerts were held in July 2019. On July 18, Brian Eno premiered his new show 'Apollo Soundtrack' in Matera. The British musician, known for the Windows 95 startup sound and his 1978 album 'Music for Airports', coined the term 'ambient' to distinguish his background music experiments from commercial productions. On July 19, the Italian electronic rock band Subsonica performed. Formed in Turin in the 1990s, the band includes Max Casacci, Samuel, Boosta, Ninja, and Vicio. Their eighth studio album '8' was released in 2018. On July 20, the program closed with the world premiere of Nicola Campogrande's 'Missa Vox Dei', commissioned by LAMS Matera and Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019. Campogrande described the work as featuring an angry God who intervenes in the Mass, with a brief instrumental section evoking divine turmoil, followed by a choral 'Amen' representing a human response.
