Matera 2019: 5 musical events not to miss in the European Capital of Culture

Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019, presents a series of musical events from May to September that blend tradition, innovation, and community participation. On May 31, Edison Studio performs a live soundtrack for the 1911 silent film "Inferno" at Casa Cava, the first Italian feature-length film based on Dante's Inferno with engravings by Gustav Doré. On July 18, Brian Eno, Roger Eno, and Daniel Lanois' "The Apollo SoundTrack" premieres outside the UK at Cava del Sole, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with NASA images and technology from Leonardo. From August 2-4, Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" is staged en plein air in Piazza S. Pietro Caveoso, co-produced with Teatro San Carlo di Napoli and involving 500 local citizens. From September 1-21, the sound art project "In Vitro. Artificial Sonification" activates Matera's streets, squares, and caves, starting at the Palombaro Lungo cistern. On September 26, "Suoni del Futuro Remoto" features an orchestra performing a score based on natural sounds from the Murgia and Sassi, with trumpeter Paolo Fresu.
