Matei Bejenaru's Mobile Darkroom Reverses Technological Transfer from East to West

artist · 2026-04-19

Matei Bejenaru, a Romanian artist, has generously given his darkroom equipment to Kettle's Yard art gallery in Cambridge for the initiative titled On Beauty: Building a Darkroom. This mobile installation signifies a reverse flow of outdated analog photography tools from post-socialist Eastern Europe to Western regions. Bejenaru's artistic endeavors challenge the boundaries between post-socialist environments and the West, focusing on the historical shifts and collective identity during Romania's shift to capitalism. His recent work includes From A to B at Tranzit.ro/Iasi. He has exhibited in group shows at Tate Modern in 2007 and the Taipei Biennial in 2008, and showcased Songs for a better future at Tate Modern's Turbine Hall from 2010 to 2011. Additionally, he is an educator at George Enescu University of Arts and established the Vector Association.
