Matchmaking series at SEAGER London bridges video games and contemporary art
London's SEAGER gallery launches Matchmaking, a four-part exhibition series exploring intersections of video games and contemporary art. Curated by artist-curator Bob Bicknell-Knight (b. 1996, Ipswich), the series runs monthly from February to June 2024. The first exhibition, Out of Bounds (February 1 – March 2, 2024), investigates virtual and physical architectures, game landscapes, and their hidden layers. Artists include Aram Bartholl, Bob Bicknell-Knight, Alice Bucknell, Mario Mu, Rosa-Maria Nuutinen, Everest Pipkin, Amba Sayal-Bennett, and Mathew Zefeldt. Subsequent shows: Character Creator (March 14 – April 13), Respawn (April 18 – May 18), and Asset Flip (May 30 – July 1). Bicknell-Knight has used video games as a medium since 2015, and Matchmaking culminates his artistic and curatorial research. The series addresses platform capitalism, surveillance, big data, military uses, violence, and climate change. Video games are presented as both a site of experimentation and a political battleground, linked to extractive industries, invisible infrastructures, and generative AI. The venue is SEAGER Distillery Tower, 2 Mill Lane, Deptford.
