Mataaho Collective and Archie Moore Win Golden Lions at Venice Biennale 2024
During the 2024 Venice Biennale, Indigenous artists were honored with two Golden Lions. The Mataaho Collective, comprised of four Māori women from Aotearoa (New Zealand), received the Golden Lion for their contribution to the main exhibition titled 'Foreigners Everywhere,' curated by Adriano Pedrosa. Their installation, 'Takapau' (2022), showcases a 200sqm canopy made of fluorescent trucking straps at the entrance of the Arsenale. Archie Moore's 'kith and kin' earned the Golden Lion for Best National Participation, marking a first for an Australian artist. This piece includes a reflective pool, 500 stacks of redacted coronial inquests into Indigenous deaths in custody, and a genealogical chart spanning 65,000 years. The Silver Lion for a Promising Young Participant was awarded to Karimah Ashadu for her video 'Machine Boys' (2024), which explores banned motorcycle taxis in Lagos. Additionally, ArtReview collaborated with Creative Australia to host discussions during the opening week.
