Massinissa Selmani's first China solo exhibition explores ambiguity through minimalist surrealism at Aranya Art Centre
Massinissa Selmani presents his debut solo exhibition in China at Aranya Art Centre North, running until 23 November. The show, titled 'distances,' features eight works including two new commissions by the venue. Selmani's practice explores ambiguity and fragility through minimalist surreal forms that evoke meaning without declaring it, resonating with the Chinese artistic tradition of liubai (leaving voids). The exhibition includes 'Untitled (2025),' a traffic cone transformed into a makeshift flag on a pedestal, and the looped animation 'La place et le lieu (2022)' depicting a scale balancing a monument fragment against a bird in flight. 'L'Immensité de l'instant (2023)' is an immersive installation with a green pastel arch, projected bird, and incised text 'while,' while 'But, then (2025)' features isolated words on platforms. The Aranya Art Centre is located in Beidaihe's coastal resort area, a site with layered histories from colonial villas to contemporary curated communities. The exhibition coincides with Gallery Weekend Beijing programming, presenting Selmani's distinctive surrealist vernacular in dialogue with the venue's contemplative atmosphere.
