Massimo De Carlo Reinterprets Aperto '93 at Frieze's Nineties Section
At Frieze London, the new Nineties section curated by Nicolas Trembley features eleven booths evoking seminal 1990s exhibitions. The only Italian participant, Massimo De Carlo, pays homage to Aperto '93, a landmark show within that year's Venice Biennale curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and conceived by Helena Kontova and Giancarlo Politi. That exhibition launched artists like Maurizio Cattelan, Damien Hirst, and Matthew Barney. De Carlo's booth includes Cattelan's "Zorro" (1995) and Rudolf Stingel's abstract canvas (1995). Other notable presentations include 303 Gallery's tribute to Karen Kilimnik's "Fountain of Youth" (1992) and Air de Paris's recreation of Pierre Joseph's 1991 tableau vivant. The Nineties section continues a revival trend that began with Massimiliano Gioni's "NYC 1993" at the New Museum in 2013, continued at Turin's Museo Ettore Fico with a focus on the Italian scene by Cristiana Perrella and Luca Beatrice, and recently at MAMCO Geneva with "Récit d'un temps court." Participating galleries include Andrea Caratsch (Switzerland), Buchholz, Neu, and Nagel Draxler (Germany).
