Massimo De Carlo Moves Gallery to Portaluppi Masterpiece, Abandons White Cube

Massimo De Carlo has relocated his Milan gallery from Lambrate to Casa Corbellini-Wassermann, a 1930s masterpiece by architect Piero Portaluppi. The inaugural exhibition, 'MCMXXXIV,' curated with Francesco Bonami, juxtaposes contemporary works with Fascist-era sculptures and furnishings. De Carlo states the move celebrates the end of the white cube as the sole architectural sign for galleries. The show includes works by Alighiero Boetti (map, 1979, over €1 million), Adolfo Wildt, Félix González-Torres, and two artists invited to the next Venice Biennale: Kaari Upson and Andra Ursuta (works priced €35,000–€65,000). De Carlo's gallery now has four locations: two in Milan, one in London, and one in Hong Kong. Staff numbers about 50, over 60% women, average age 30. Upcoming fairs include TEFAF Maastricht, Frieze New York, Art Basel Hong Kong, miart, and Art Cologne. During Art Basel Hong Kong, an installation by Elmgreen & Dragset will open at the Pedder Building space; in Milan, a solo show by Jennifer Guidi will debut during fair week.
