Massimo De Carlo Hong Kong relocates to Tai Kwun arts hub
Italian gallerist Massimo De Carlo is moving his Hong Kong outpost to Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts, a former police station turned contemporary arts complex. The relocation, scheduled for March 2022, coincides with Art Basel Hong Kong (March 24–26). The new space will open with an exhibition by Sanford Biggers. De Carlo first established his Asian base in Hong Kong in 2016, also during Art Basel, and serves on the fair's selection committee. Tai Kwun is one of Hong Kong's most significant revitalization projects, with restoration led by Herzog & de Meuron, Purcell, and Rocco Design Architects. Sixteen historic buildings were restored, and new buildings designed by Herzog & de Meuron draw inspiration from the original granite walls. The firm also designed M+, the world's largest museum dedicated to modern and contemporary Asian art, opened in 2021 in the West Kowloon Cultural District. De Carlo's recent expansions include a new Milan space at Casa Corbellini-Wassermann by Piero Portaluppi, a virtual gallery launched during the first lockdown, and Pièce Unique in Paris at 57 Rue de Turenne, renovated by Kengo Kuma.
