Massimo de Caria's Kinetic Sculptures at Assab One in Milan

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Massimo de Caria (born 1968, Naples) presents a series of mobile installations created between 2013 and 2018 at Assab One in Milan. The works combine sculptural materials with components salvaged from a defunct postage meter factory, resulting in hybrid forms that are raw yet harmonious, accompanied by the incessant sound of motors. The pieces evoke a melancholic neorealism, as if industrial remnants require more precious contemporary support. Notable elements include a rotating feather caressing a stone, a cotton ball attached to a mechanical arm vibrating a metal rod, and a lit candle spinning and dripping wax onto the floor. Where installations lack their own sound, compositions by Paolo Ricci provide an immaterial echo that gives voice to the sculptures. The immersive environment, curated by Giorgio Verzotti, ensures an experiential character but risks overwhelming the works due to excessive dialogue with the surrounding industrial space.
