Massimiliano Gioni's Encyclopedic Palace Biennale Explores Art as Esoteric Knowledge

The 55th Venice Biennale, titled 'The Encyclopedic Palace' and curated by Massimiliano Gioni, took place from June 1 to November 24, 2013, at the Arsenal and International Pavilion. Gioni's showcase delved into the concept of art as a form of philosophical insight, presenting pieces from diverse periods, including contemporary videos by Silver Lion recipient Camille Henrot and Sharon Hayes, alongside outsider art from Augustin Lesage and Morton Bartlett. The exhibition commenced with Carl Jung's Red Book, highlighting artists' obsessions. The International Pavilion emphasized representations of inner knowledge, featuring works by Rudolf Steiner. Meanwhile, the Arsenal focused on the influence of imagery, showcasing Kan Xuan and Steve McQueen. The event concluded with pieces by Dieter Roth, with Marisa Merz awarded the Golden Lion.
