Massimiliano Gatti's Middle Eastern Ruins Photography at Studio la Città, Verona
Massimiliano Gatti (born 1981 in Pavia), who holds degrees in Pharmacy and Photography from Bauer in Milan, presents his solo exhibition "Aleph" at Studio la Città in Verona, running until July 31, 2020. The show features works from four series: "Superficie" (2014), created during an archaeological mission by the University of Udine in Iraq near ancient Nineveh; "Aleppo è una foglia d'Alloro," focusing on the relentless passage of time; "Le Nuvole," juxtaposing images of Palmyra with cloud blankets documenting ISIS devastation; and "La Collezione," a new series debuting at the gallery, symbolically narrating a lost Syria through the artist's personal stamp collection. Gatti began his career alongside major archaeological missions: first at Qatna, Syria (2008–2011), then with the PARTeN project in Iraqi Kurdistan, funded by the University of Udine and Fondazione CRUP. Curator Maud Greppi explains that "Aleph," the first letter of the Phoenician and Hebrew alphabets, also signifies the number one, symbolizing beginning and origin—reflecting Gatti's intimate documentary approach to Middle Eastern ruins as a constantly transforming path toward an unknown future. The exhibition requires advance booking via email.
