Masseria Pernice in Sicily Launches Annual Artist Residency

artist · 2026-04-27

Masseria Pernice, an ancient estate near Monreale, Sicily, has expanded its cultural program to include an annual artist residency. Originally Jesuit territory, the property became part of the Sallier de la Tour noble family in the 18th century. Under Paolo Sallier de la Tour, the estate combines a bed and breakfast, agricultural activities, and an artistic program tied to the natural cycle. The residency, curated by art historian Cornelia Lauf (John Cabot University, Rome), selects artists without regard to nationality, age, or medium. Artists are encouraged to create works inspired by the landscape and nearby historical sites such as Monte Jato, Segesta, and Selinunte. Completed works enter the Pernice collection, and documentation is published in a catalog by Pernice Residency Foundation. The residency previously hosted musicians including tenor Vincenzo La Scola, jazz pianist Salvatore Bonafede, the Juanjo Dominguez Trio, and Radiohead's Thom Yorke (2017). The 2020 residency begins March 7 with artist and publisher Robert Violette, head of Violette Editions. Paolo Sallier de la Tour emphasizes the project's focus on absolute creative freedom and the interaction between natural context and artistic practice.
