MASP Secures 30-Year Loan of 66 Works from B3 Stock Exchange, Filling Gaps in Brazilian Modernism
The Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) has entered into a 30-year loan agreement with the São Paulo stock exchange B3, acquiring 66 artworks for its collection. This is the third such agreement since Heitor Martins assumed the museum's presidency in 2014. Curators Adriano Pedrosa and Olivia Ardui selected 25 of these works for the inaugural exhibition 'Acervo em transformação: Comodato MASP B3,' which opened on June 14. The loan introduces significant artists like Lygia Clark, Ione Saldanha, and Abraham Palatnik to the museum's holdings, while also strengthening its representation of Brazilian modernism with works by Edmund Pink, Benedito Calixto, Anita Malfatti, and Emiliano Di Cavalcanti. Curatorial assistant Guilherme Giufrida noted the collection helps fill important gaps, particularly in modernist and abstract art, areas less common in MASP's typically figurative displays. Most works originated from B3's offices in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, having been previously cataloged and occasionally exhibited. Some pieces are currently undergoing restoration for future display. The commemorative exhibition for the loan agreement runs until July 29.
