MASP's 'Histórias da Sexualidade' Explores Sex, Gender, and Desire Through 300 Works

The Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) presents 'Histórias da Sexualidade', an exhibition curated by Lilia Schwarcz and others, featuring nearly 300 works that investigate sex, gender, and desire as fundamental aspects of social representation and visual culture. The show is divided into nine thematic nuclei, including 'Corpos nus', 'Voyeurismos', 'Religiosidades', and 'Políticas do corpo e ativismos'. While the curatorial framework aims to be liberating, some critics note that the rigid segmentation may constrain interpretation. Highlights include works by Chico Tabibuia, Francisco Leopoldo e Silva, Gauguin, Ana Mendieta, Ernesto Neto, Descartes Gadelha, Leon Ferrari, Alair Gomes, Tracey Moffat, and Sergio Zevallos Santa Rosa. The exhibition runs until February 14 and is the fourth in MASP's series of thematic shows, following childhood, madness, and feminism, with future editions on Afro-Atlantic and Indigenous histories.
