MASP Receives 21 Works from 19 Afro-Brazilian Artists, Marking 2018 Afro-Atlantic Histories Program

institutional · 2026-04-23

The Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) has enriched its permanent collection with 21 pieces created by 19 Afro-Brazilian artists, courtesy of donations linked to its 2018 initiative on Afro-Atlantic narratives. Notable artists include Abdias Nascimento, Chico Tabibuia, and Dalton Paula, among others. According to artistic director Adriano Pedrosa, these new additions signify a departure from the collection's previous emphasis on European art. Beginning in April 2019, the works will be showcased in 'Acervo em transformação' on Lina Bo Bardi's iconic glass easels. Pedrosa also intends to focus on acquiring works by women artists. All donated pieces were previously featured in monographic exhibitions or the award-winning 'Histórias Afro-atlânticas,' which received several honors, including the Grande Prêmio da Crítica from APCA.
