MASP Launches Virtual Hélio Oiticica Exhibition on July 23

exhibition · 2026-04-23

On July 23, MASP launches the virtual exhibition 'Hélio Oiticica: a dança na minha experiência,' marking the artist's inaugural solo display at the museum. Initially planned for a physical opening in mid-March, the retrospective faced delays due to social distancing guidelines. The online version showcases 126 pieces centered on rhythm, music, and popular culture. A live discussion at 6 PM on July 23 will feature MASP's artistic director Adriano Pedrosa alongside Vivian Crockett and Tomás Toledo, who co-curated the exhibition. Crockett also provided a new text for the catalogue. A virtual tour with Toledo and exhibition views will be accessible on the museum's website that day. The exhibition draws its title from a 1965 text by Oiticica, highlighting his desire for de-intellectualization and expression through dance and samba. This show, in collaboration with MAM Rio, kicks off MASP's 2020 programming cycle 'Histórias da dança.' The illustrated catalogue, available at the MASP store, contains essays from various contributors, including Adrian Anagnost and André Lepecki, along with a biographical note by Lopes and extensive documentary content.
