MASP exhibition explores Tarsila do Amaral's self-portraits and Brazilian modernism

The Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) is presenting an exhibition examining the self-portraits of Tarsila do Amaral, a central figure in Brazilian modernism. The show is structured in three parts, analyzing different phases of her self-representation. Part I focuses on "A Espanhola," while Part II examines "Achiropita," and Part III explores the various reinterpretations of her foundational image. The exhibition coincides with the centenary of the Semana de Arte Moderna, which Tarsila helped define through her involvement with the Grupo dos Cinco. Alongside this focus, the museum is also hosting a display titled "Bacon e Mário de Andrade no MASP: Um Encontro Esquísito," creating a dialogue between the British painter Francis Bacon and the Brazilian modernist writer Mário de Andrade. A separate exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Fundação Edson Queiroz, featuring a mix of historical and contemporary artworks. The program includes reflections on the relationship between painting and photography, specifically through the works of Lasar Segall and Pablo Picasso. Scholar Aracy Amaral is highlighted for her rigorous and curiosity-driven research into these artistic movements.
