Masciarelli Winery Launches Artist Residency for 40th Anniversary

artist · 2026-04-27

The historic Abruzzo winery Masciarelli Tenute Agricole has launched Masciarelli Art Project, a long-term annual artist residency program to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1981 in San Martino sulla Marrucina by Gianni Masciarelli, the winery is now led by his wife Marina Cvetic and daughter Miriam Lee Masciarelli. The residency will take place at the 17th-century Castello di Semivicoli, a boutique hotel nestled in the hills near the Majella National Park. Each year, an international artist will be invited to immerse themselves in the family history and the Abruzzo region to create limited-edition wine labels and a site-specific installation. The first resident artist is Belgian designer Job Smeets, co-founder of Studio Job, known for his ironic and neo-gothic design. His residency took place in April 2021, and the resulting works will be unveiled in October 2021, including a label for the winery's renowned Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Villa Gemma and an installation at the castle. Miriam Lee Masciarelli described the project as a continuation of her father's legacy of curiosity and exploration.
