Masbedo's 'Welcome Palermo' Premieres at Lo Schermo dell'Arte 2019

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The artistic duo Masbedo (Nicolò Massazza and Iacopo Bedogni) will present their new film 'Welcome Palermo' in world premiere at Lo Schermo dell'Arte 2019, the Florence festival directed by Silvia Lucchesi. The film's concluding scene was shot in the ballroom of Palazzo Gangi, the same location used by Luchino Visconti for his 1963 classic 'Il Gattopardo'. Over fifty years later, the space frames a traditional Indian dance performed by Palermo's Tamil community. The feature-length work explores the relationship between Palermo and Italian cinema, building on the duo's earlier interactive multi-channel installation 'Videomobile', which was successfully presented at Manifesta 12. In Florence, the screening is scheduled for November 15. The film incorporates multiple perspectives, including testimonies from local cultural and political figures and residents, reconstructing the cinematic memory of Palermo. It pays homage to directors such as De Seta, Gregoretti, and Visconti.
