Masayoshi Sukita's David Bowie Photos on Show in Palermo
A new exhibition at Palazzo Sant'Elia in Palermo, titled 'Heroes – Bowie by Sukita', presents decades of photographs by Masayoshi Sukita (born 1938 in Nogata, Fukuoka) featuring David Bowie and other rock legends. The show runs until January 31, 2021. Sukita first met Bowie in 1972 through Yasuko Takahashi, a collaborator of fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto, who created Bowie's Ziggy Stardust costumes. The exhibition includes iconic portraits of Bowie wearing Yamamoto's designs. In 1977, during Bowie's Tokyo visit to promote Iggy Pop's album 'The Idiot', Sukita photographed both artists; one image from that session became the cover of Bowie's legendary album 'Heroes'. The display weaves together known and lesser-known shots, tracing Bowie's musical and aesthetic evolution across London, Berlin, the United States, and Japan, reflecting the political and social fervor of the 1970s. The exhibition offers a kaleidoscopic view of music and costume history, revealing a melancholic, human side of Bowie beyond his stage persona.
