Masaccio's Madonna del Solletico at Siena Cathedral Crypt

The exhibition 'L'eredità del cardinal Antonio Casini, principe senese della Chiesa' at the Crypt of Siena Cathedral centers on Masaccio's Madonna del Solletico, a small panel (24.5 x 18 cm) painted for Cardinal Antonio Casini around his elevation to cardinal on May 24, 1426. The work, on loan from the Uffizi Galleries, depicts the Madonna and Child in an intimate domestic scene, with the Child being tickled—a gesture director Eike Schmidt likens to a TikTok video. The exhibition also features an ivory pastoral staff with a Baptism scene, manuscripts including the Cerimoniale dei vescovi illuminated by Martino di Bartolomeo (from the Biblioteca Laurenziana, Florence) and the Messale romano (from the Biblioteca degli Intronati, Siena), a copy of Casini's will, and a relief by Jacopo della Quercia. It strengthens ties between Siena and the Uffizi, following the reunification of the Piccolomini Spannocchi Collection at Santa Maria della Scala. The show runs until November 2, daily 10:30–18:00 (last entry 17:30).
