Marysia Lewandowska and Neil Cummings' Exhibition 'Enthusiasts' Revives Polish Amateur Film Club Archives
From June 25 to August 29, 2004, Marysia Lewandowska and Neil Cummings showcased 'Enthusiasts from Amateur Film Clubs' at Centrum Sztuki Wspolczesnej in Warsaw. This exhibition highlighted 16mm short films produced in the 1960s and 1970s by over 300 clubs affiliated with Warsaw's Federation of Amateur Film Clubs, with backing from the Polish government. The films encompassed labor documentaries, experimental pieces, and personal narratives, organized thematically following two years of research involving twenty-two clubs. An installation recreated the atmosphere of a club interior. The exhibition ignited conversations about creative expression during late socialist Poland, echoing themes from Walter Benjamin's 1934 lecture. In 2005, 'Enthusiasts' will be exhibited at Whitechapel Gallery in London and Rooseum in Malmo.
