Maryam Tafakory Wins 2024 Jarman Award for Experimental Filmmaking

The 2024 Film London Jarman Award has been awarded to Maryam Tafakory, who will receive a prize of £10,000. This Iranian artist, based in London, incorporates archival footage and cinematic elements from Iranian films produced after 1979. Her works are set to be showcased at the Whitechapel Gallery in London on November 30 and December 1. Founded in 2008, the Jarman Award honors contemporary filmmakers and collaborates with Whitechapel Gallery and Barbican. Notable past recipients include Grace Ndiritu (2022) and Rehana Zaman (2023). Tafakory's accolades include exhibitions at MoMA and the National Gallery of Art, among others. Other contenders for the award were Larry Achiampong and Maeve Brennan. Matthew Barrington commended her focus on Iranian cultural identity.
