Mary Magdalene Through Artists' Eyes: Major Exhibition in Forlì

The Musei San Domenico in Forlì presents 'Maddalena. Il mistero e l'immagine,' a comprehensive exhibition exploring the enigmatic figure of Mary Magdalene through art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Curated by Gianfranco Brunelli, the show features over 100 works, including masterpieces by Donatello, Giovanni Bellini, Canova, and Hayez, tracing her evolution from penitent saint to eroticized icon. The exhibition is structured in thematic sections, beginning with her presence at the Crucifixion and proceeding through her life as a myrrh-bearer and her later depictions as a sensual, contemplative figure. Highlights include a 1340 crucifix by Mello da Gubbio, a terracotta group by Guido Mazzoni, and paintings by Federico Barocci and Luca Giordano. The show also juxtaposes ancient artifacts, such as an Apulian krater with the death of Meleager, with Renaissance works to underscore enduring visual motifs.
