Mary Heilmann on Bosch's Triptych: A Personal Encounter

Artist Mary Heilmann has died. In 2013, she shared her fascination with Hieronymus Bosch's 'Last Judgment Triptych' in an interview, discussing her Catholic childhood, hell, Freud, and why abstract art can also tell stories. Heilmann first saw the painting in the early 2000s, but had encountered it many times before in books and reproductions since childhood. Growing up in an Irish-Catholic family, she attended Mass weekly, and religious imagery was a constant presence.
