Marvin Gates' Mobile 'Barbara' Exhibition Features Meander Paintings on NYC Streets

Marvin Gates presents his mobile exhibition 'Barbara' on various streets around New York's Lower East Side from October 9, 2013 to January 5, 2014. The installation features eight delicate works painted on small steel panels, displayed within a steel shell structure that moves to a new sidewalk location daily. Gates created two distinct series for the show: the 'Meander' series with geometric tessellated designs inspired by Egyptian art, and the 'Seasons' series depicting simplified images including a reindeer, a hand holding a blossoming plant, and a pair of handcuffs. The artworks are softly illuminated by light reflecting off pavement, creating a quiet, otherworldly atmosphere amid urban noise. Admission is free and the structure accommodates approximately three adults at a time. The exhibition closes for holidays from December 23 to January 1 before concluding its run. This mobile gallery experience brings art directly to public spaces, with changing locations representing an innovative approach to exhibition presentation.
