Marvene Ash Wins 2026 Local Contemporary Art Prize

award · 2026-05-02

Marvene Ash, an artist from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, has been awarded the $5,000 acquisitive 2026 Local Contemporary Art Prize for her piece titled 'Studio furniture (hare hiding)'. This oil painting on Belgian linen measures 108 × 92 cm and draws inspiration from Albrecht Dürer's 1502 print 'Young Hare'. Ash creatively reinterprets Dürer's hare within a still life that merges studio furniture, transcending time and space across three generations. The twelfth edition of the prize showcased forty finalists. Ketakii Jewson-Brown earned the 2D Excellence Award, while Samantha Mays took home the 3D Excellence Award. The artwork is photographed by Christine Hall of Myphotomotion and is presented with the support of the artist and Caloundra Regional Gallery, Queensland.
