Martine Aballéa's Last Lost Lakes at Galerie art: concept

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Galerie art: concept in Paris presents Martine Aballéa's exhibition Last Lost Lakes, running from April 25 to June 13, 2009. The show features recent works including colorized black-and-white landscape photographs that evoke Gustave Le Gray, Hubert Robert, and Ruysdael. Originally conceived as a postcard foldout, the series was renamed Last Lost Lakes after Google returned too many results for Lost Lakes. The exhibition also includes four pinned sheets with potential novel openings, a poster for an unfilmed movie, and works from the series Épaves du désir with Gothic lettering. Older pieces from the exhibition Magasin Fantôme at Le Parvis art center in Tarbes are displayed, featuring 'fictions of miraculous products' like a photograph of a river silkscreened with 'sirop de cristal de roche transparent'. Aballéa notes these are her last works before Photoshop. Born in 1950 in New York, she moved to Paris in 1973 and has developed a poetic practice blending conceptual art, gardening, photography, cooking, and literature. The exhibition is accompanied by the retrospective publication Roman partiel (Sémiose éditions, 2009) with texts by Pascale Cassagnau and Élisabeth Lebovici.
