Martina Bagnoli Appointed Director of Accademia Carrara Bergamo
Martina Bagnoli, an art historian with over twenty years of international experience, has been appointed as the new director of Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, succeeding Maria Cristina Rodeschini. Bagnoli, who previously directed the Fondazione of the museum, holds degrees from the University of Cambridge (BA, MA) and a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She has directed medieval art collections at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and taught at various US universities. In Italy, she served as director of the Gallerie Estensi, where she initiated a vast transformation program including reinstallations and digitization of collections. Since 2022, she has been president of the Fondazione Europea. Her first major exhibition, "Napoli a Bergamo," opening April 23, focuses on 17th-century Neapolitan painting by Luca Giordano and his disciple Nicola Malinconico, based on archival research. Bagnoli aims to build on Bergamo's legacy as Italian Capital of Culture, expanding the museum's national and international reach through partnerships, including a planned exhibition with a US institution. She also plans to complete the garden project by June, creating a circular exhibition route. Bagnoli emphasizes continuing Rodeschini's personal relationships with donors, collectors, and artists, and fostering international collaborations.
