Martin Piekar's Debut Novel Tops August 2026 Book List

The German magazine kulturnews has published its list of the best books for August 2026, featuring six titles. Topping the list is Martin Piekar's debut novel "Vom Fällen eines Stammbaums" (Rowohlt, 464 pages, €26), a dialog-driven autofictional work exploring a German-Polish mother-son relationship. The protagonist Marcin, a poet like Piekar himself, navigates his mother Regina's traumatic past—born in a Russian Gulag in the early 1950s, raised in socialist Poland, and later a single mother in Germany battling depression and cancer. The novel is noted for its unique use of Polish-accented dialogue and its contribution to German-Polish postmigrant narratives. Second place goes to Annika Büsing's "Magisch" (S. Fischer, 288 pages, €24), a love story between two thirty-somethings that also tackles societal division through the character of a Nazi brother. Lily King's "Herz König" (C.H. Beck, 224 pages, €24) ranks third, following a love triangle across decades. Şeyda Kurt's debut novel "Zeit der Monster" (Hanser, 288 pages, €23) takes fourth place, blending climate change themes with a story of resistance in a Cologne-like neighborhood. Tamara Štajner's "Luft nach unten" (Zsolnay, 336 pages, €25) is fifth, a novel about Iva's return to Ohrid for a funeral that unearths family trauma. Jess Walter's "Schöne Ruinen" (Kampa, 416 pages, €25) ranks sixth, a love story spanning decades from 1962 Italy to Hollywood. All books are published in 2026.
